WoW as a single player game
6 July 2025
Like the last post stated, I'm running a WoW private server for myself. No one else can access it. It was genuinely unnerving the first time, playing in an empty world, which inspired the silly little story I wrote. Thankfully I am not actually being haunted, and even have some fake players ingame through the use of a module which adds player bots. They run around, quest, kill, and chat like real people which means I can still do group content stuff, but without worrying about finding people, being online at the right time, or the harassment that comes when things don't go 100%.
World of Warcraft works surprisingly well as a single player game when you have these NPCs running around. We had a successful run of Utgarde Keep yesterday!
Bet you won't guess which one I am!
It's nice for flying around taking screenshots too. Here's Grizzly Hills with a Grizzly Bear.
To be honest though, it's not perfect. When I just want to get into some WoW, run a dungeon, sure it scratches the itch but the best part of WoW was always the community, being in a social guild that runs events, or just chatting while everyone does their own thing. Sadly this can't, and I doubt ever could, replace that. Still though, if you want to play WotLK and don't like the prospects of the current private servers out there, running your own is really simple.
I run the docker version of Azeroth Core with the Playerbots module.
