The Honey Pot

Book Review #3: Frankenstein [DNF]

10 January 2026

It was going to happen sooner or later, maybe it's good that it was sooner so I don't have to feel as guilty. I tried, really tried to like this book because it's an iconic classic, but I can't.

Title: Frankenstein
Author: Mary Shelley
Publication Date: 01 January, 1818
Official Length: 242 pages
% Read: 14%

I am not going to give star reviews for unfinished books, it would feel unfair. I'll just post how far I got instead.

This book is a product of its time, and I think the problems I had are all with me, and not with the book. It felt like it had been put through a thesaurus, and I just couldn't connect to the story. I never "dropped in" to the world like I usually do, I was just reading a book. I probably tried to read it too soon into my literary experience, on the ladder of literature I'm a few rungs up from "Clifford the Big Red Dog" and many rungs down from "War and Peace". I believe there's maybe a 60% chance I'll come back to Frankenstein when I've got a few more books under my belt and I can better handle the language, but for now I'd rather call it a DNF and move on to something I'll enjoy, than to battle through and potentially burn out.
